MOORE — On Thursday, Aug. 15, Feed The Children hosted Student Strong, a significant series of back to school events benefitting five different communities affected by the May tornadoes and storms. Through this back to school initiative, Feed The Children teamed up with multiple organizations and non-profits to provide a variety of goods and services for 1,600 families in Moore, and more than 3,200 families across Oklahoma.
Feed The Children’s Student Strong was comprised of five different events in Moore, Shawnee, El Reno, Carney and Little Axe. At the event held in Moore, recipients were given the opportunity to collect school supplies, food, personal care items, clothing, shoes and also receive free eyeglass exams and haircuts, while enjoying carnival-like activities. From volunteers to recipients, around 4,000 people were in attendance at the Moore event.
“With school starting again, we wanted to provide students, families, and educators impacted by the May tornadoes and storms with the goods and services they needed to have a successful school year,” said Kevin Hagan, president and CEO of Feed The Children. “Feed The Children will continue to serve Oklahoma, and we are dedicated to rebuilding these communities. We are here to stay.”
The Moore Student Strong event was held at First Baptist Church of Moore. Special guests included Administrator Audrey Rowe with the Food and Nutrition Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, University of Oklahoma football players and more.
“Today is a very important day for these kids because when they go back to school tomorrow (Aug. 16), they won’t see some of their friends or their teachers. Today’s a celebration for these families and a way to provide the parents the resources they need. I’m so grateful to Feed The Children for allowing me to be a part of the Moore community today,” said Rowe.
Sponsors and partners for the Moore Student Strong event included Moore Independent School District, Nike, Paul Mitchell, Voskos Yogurt, Blue Bunny Ice Cream, and Burt’s Bees. Volunteers included Nike, First Baptist Church of Moore, Tidal Creek Fellowship Church, Good 360, Tinker Federal Credit Union, Moore Schools and Oklahoma State University Food and Nutrition Services.
