Then take care of your cars and slow down, says AAA-Oklahoma spokesman, Chuck Mai.

Mai said there are four ways that “have the most impact” on your vehicle’s fuel economy.

And the first is vehicle maintenance.

“Keep your tires properly inflated,” he said. “Get a tune up and change that air filter. A dirty air filter can cut fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent.”

Second, think about how you drive.

“Aggressive driving, jack rabbit starts and speeding will certainly eat up more gas,” he said.

For example, driving 70 miles-per-hour instead of 60 miles-per-hour will add between 40 to 50 cents to the cost of every gallon of fuel you buy.

Driving at 65 mph instead of 55, uses 20 percent more fuel and driving at 75 mph instead of 65 uses at least 25 percent more fuel.

Consumers driving at 55, Mai said, “get the best fuel economy.”

Third, plan your trips.

Try to arrange your errands where you do all of them in one, single trip instead of several smaller ones.

“Also, try to avoid rush hour when planning vacation routes,” he said. “When your car is idling, you’re getting zero miles per gallon.”

Fourth, consider a more fuel efficient vehicle.
