MOORE — Sooner fans can show their true stripes Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The University of Oklahoma Athletic Department is asking you to help “Stripe the Stadium,” according to information on SoonerSports.com.
“I’m really excited for Notre Dame to come here,” OU student Tanner Brodess said. “I hope OU pulls it out.”
Brodess said he had heard about “Stripe the Stadium” earlier that day via Twitter. Another OU student, Logan Liles, said he heard about the plan as well.
“If that can work out, that would be awesome,” Liles said, of filling alternating sections of the stadium in shades of crimson and white.
Liles said he mostly is looking forward to the tradition that both schools bring and the caliber of players that Notre Dame will bring.
“They (the universities) carry a lot of history,” OU student Brian Bates said.
In nine meetings, OU has defeated Notre Dame once and that was in 1956 on the Irish’s home turf in South Bend, Ind.
This year’s plan to Stripe the Stadium is simple, fans will coordinate the display of crimson and cream for the national viewing audience on Saturday.
University officials would like to see fans wear either crimson or white depending on their seat inside Memorial Stadium.
According to the website, fans in even-numbered sections are encouraged to wear crimson-colored gear and fans in odd-numbered sections should wear white.
OU students are asked to wear crimson.
Those in attendance will get a commemorative OU/Notre Dame rally towel upon entry.
Sooner fan Dwayne Basey said he will have “goosebumps” watching the game just because of the tradition the two universities carry.
“They (Notre Dame) are the team that came in here and broke our 47- game winning streak,” he said. “It’s a huge, huge game and it has national ranking implications. “They’re both top 10 BCS schools and (Notre Dame is) undefeated. If Oklahoma could defeat them, that would skyrocket them into the BCS standings,” Basey said.
