Redistricting to add three new schools

MOORE — Moore Public Schools’ board of education approved redistricting finalizations at a regular board meeting this past month. Moore Public Schools Superintendent Robert Romines said the school district has completed redistricting and will add two new elementary schools and one new junior high.

“Even with all we’ve been through this past May, we’re growing,” Romines said.

Romines explained that Moore Public Schools had seen particular growth in the southern part of the district. A demographics committee was formed and worked with neighboring municipalities, OG&E and Oklahoma Natural Gas to decide where to redraw district lines. The committee was made up of administrators, teachers and patrons. Romines said contractors the school consulted expected 3,000 plus new homes and apartment dwellings to be built in the southern part of the district.

One new elementary school is set to be built off of Portland on the southwest side of the school district and is scheduled to open in August. The second new elementary school will be located at 34th Street and Sunnylane Road and is scheduled to open August 2015. Additionally, a new junior high school will be built off of 134th Street and South Pennsylvania Avenue. The junior high is expected to open August 2015.

Plaza Towers and Briarwood Elementary Schools, which were devastated in the recent May 2013 tornados, also are expected to be rebuilt and open this August.

Romines said that the redistricting finalizations do allow for some grandfather provisions.

“... for example, a fifth-grader now who will be in sixth grade could stay at the same elementary school even if their district lines change,” Romines said. “Allowing some provisions like that is the right thing to do for the kids.”
