MOORE — Numbers play a significant role in the Bible. An online source lists the top 10 numbers in the Bible.
No. 1: The One True God. The most important Commandment: No. 1 (Thou shalt have no other gods besides me.”
No. 2: God told Noah to bring the animals into the ark by two.
No. 3: The Trinity. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost.
Samuel was called by the Lord three times. There were three wise men. Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness three times. Jesus raised three people from the dead. Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days. Jesus rose from the dead on the third day.
No. 4: There are four major writing prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel. There are four gospels. The lineage of Jesus is traced back to Judah, the fourth tribe. There are four points to the cross.
No. 5: Jesus used five loaves and two fish for the miracle of feeding the 5,000.
No. 6: The work week is six days long and then God rested. There are 66 books in the Bible. 666 symbolizes the antichrist.
No. 7: The menorah has seven candles. Joshua led the Israelites around the walls of Jericho seven times. Revelation is written to the seven churches of Asia Minor. When someone asked Jesus how many times are we to forgive our brother who sins against us, Jesus responds, “70 x 7.” The tribulation will last seven years. The first sentence of the first verse of the Old Testament, in the original Hebrew, has seven words. The first sentence of the first verse of the Gospel of Mark, which was the first to be written, has seven words.
No. 10: There are Ten Commandments. Noah was the 10th patriarch before the flood.
No. 12: There are 12 tribes of Israel. There were 12 disciples. The foundation of the walls of heaven are made up of 12 precious stones. The tree of life yields 12 types of fruit.
No. 40: The Israelites wondered in the wilderness 40 years. Moses was on Mt. Sinai for 40 days. 300 years later, Elijah spent 40 days on the same mountain worshiping God. In the days of the Noah’s flood, it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness. Jesus remained on the earth 40 days after his resurrection.
