Local CASA supervisor is Child Advocate of the Year

MOORE — Cleveland County CASA Supervisor Tiffany Page said she was shocked when she learned she was awarded the Oklahoma CASA Association’s 2014 Child Advocate of the Year.

CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, volunteer to work with children in the child welfare system who have become victims of abuse or neglect.

Volunteers advocate for the children, once appointed to a specific case by a judge, through independent investigations of the case, written reports and recommendations to the court, and regular testimony on behalf of the children in a family, according to Kathleen Romero, Cleveland County CASA executive director. They are a United Way partner agency.

Page will receive her award April 12 during an awards banquet as part of the Oklahoma CASA Association’s 24th annual Child Welfare Conference.

Page said she has worked with Cleveland County CASA for six years. She became aware of the program in graduate school while looking for a practicum.

“I fell in love with it when I heard about it,” she said.

She was planning on pursuing pre-law, but when she realized she could become a social worker and still be involved with the court system CASA was a natural fit. When she finished her practicum, she was hired full time in 2008.

Volunteer Rebecca Laughlin-Young started about six months after Page and said Page has been the best supervisor, making herself available at all times and always giving good advice.

“Nobody deserves this award more than her,” Young said. “She is always so kind.”

While Page said she was very honored to receive the award, she didn’t think it was a big deal because she was just doing her job.

As a supervisor, Page works closely with CASA volunteers and participates in many different community groups that work to improve the lives of children served by child welfare systems.
