MOORE — Candice Baxendale, of Moore, won a $5,000 scholarship as part of the “Together We Care” Nurse Practitioner Scholarship Program sponsored by MinuteClinic, the walk-in medical clinics inside select CVS/pharmacy stores, and Johnson & Johnson Family of Consumer Companies.

Baxendale is studying to be a doctor in nursing practice at Oklahoma City University.

The “Together We Care” program awarded five scholarships to future doctors in nursing practice through the Foundation of the International Scholarship and Tuition Services Inc. The scholarships help to cover tuition, books and fees for the 2013-2014 academic year.

“Nurse practitioners are an important part of the MinuteClinic model as we grow and open 150 new clinics nationwide in 2013. As the nation’s largest employer of nurse practitioners, we support the education of men and women to who are pursuing their advanced nursing degrees,” said Angela Patterson, chief nurse practitioner officer for MinuteClinic.

“These dedicated professionals will play an essential role in helping to address the nation’s primary care shortage and make high-quality, convenient and affordable health care services more accessible to the American public.”

The scholarship winners are in programs leading to licensure as an APRN with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialty or other special interest in community or public health at a nationally accredited nurse practitioner master’s program or doctor’s program.

High academic performance and strong community involvement also were considered in applicants.
