Some songs just seem to stick with you

MOORE — There was a spider in our bathtub this morning.  It wouldn’t qualify as “itsy bitsy” and it certainly wasn’t a tarantula.  It was the size of a quarter and very dark black.

Not willing to share my tub with this creature, I took a paper towel and squashed it, only to have a zillion spider webs attach themselves to my arm in the process.  Totally creepy.  I’m not afraid of spiders but I prefer them not crawling or jumping on me and I can’t think of anyone who likes the feeling of walking through a spider web.

One couldn’t help think of the song, “The Itsy Bitsy Spider.”   I’ve never seen a spider come out of a water spout before, and I’m not even sure it came from the spout, but it was certainly in the bathtub so there must be some truth to this old children’s song.  Had I not sent the spider to an early death, I’m sure he/she would have spun more webs for the unsuspecting shower-taker the next day.

We’ve had some crazy songs over the years. Roger Miller’s “You Can’t Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd,” is a fun song, that makes no sense at all, but it has cute lyrics and a catchy tune.

A sure sign that anything goes.

How about “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?”  Teenagers today don’t even know what a bedpost is, but just ask an oldie but goodie and they’ll be happy to explain.

Who would ever have thought a song like “The Wheels on the Bus go Round and Round” would catch on like it did?  The songwriter and copyright date are unknown, but millions of children and adults could join in this tune at the drop of a hat.

There are some Gospel favorites, too. Songs that no matter how many times you hear them; they only seem to get better.  Songs like: Great is Thy Faithfulness; What a Friend We Have in Jesus; O Happy Day; His Eye is on the Sparrow; How Great Thou Art; Come and Dine; Each Step I Take; The Old Rugged Cross; It Is Well With My Soul; Leaning On The Everlasting Arms; In The Garden; Rock of Ages and so many more.

Whether they are fun songs or heart-touching songs, we are truly thankful for music and the joy these songs bring.
