Moore War Run to benefit tornado survivors

MOORE — Proceeds from this year’s Moore War Run will be shared with Southmoore students affected by the May storms.

Proceeds from the run are normally shared equally between Westmoore High School and Moore High School, but this year the organizers decided to use a portion of the money to benefit the tornado relief for Southmoore students.

“It was our understanding that about 40 percent of the student body was affected by the storms, and since they don’t have their own alumni association to help them, we wanted to do that,” said Kelli Kinnamon, race director and Westmoore class of 1992 alumna.

For the last five years, alums from rival high schools Moore and Westmoore have put aside their differences to organize this race and raise money for current students at their schools.

“We’ve been able to start scholarship funds because of it,” Kinnamon said about Westmoore.

Last year the race raised $12,000, Kinnamon said.

After the May 20 tornado hit Moore and damaged many Southmoore students’ homes, Kinnamon and other alumni decided to change the name from the Moore War Run to the Moore Strong Run.

“We were trying to show unity in the community — take the rivalry out of it and show unity,” Kinnamon said.

Anyone can participate in the 5k run/walk, which will start at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 24 at Moore High School and take participants through downtown Moore.
