About 1,200 seniors from Moore and Westmoore High Schools will participate in graduation ceremonies this Thursday and Friday at Oklahoma City’s Cox Convention Center.

Westmoore High School will hold its graduation ceremony Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Cox Center while Moore High School will graduate its seniors on Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Cox Center.

This year marks the last year the Moore School district will have only two high schools.

Beginning this fall, the district’s new Southmoore High School opens, giving the district — considered the third largest in the state — its third high school.

Moore school superintendent Deborah Arato said she was excited by the change.

“I think that we’re going to have a wonderful opportunity for the development of new customs,” she said. “It will be exciting to see new traditions evolve at Southmoore. It will be exciting to see their take on their tradition.”

And while both Moore and Westmoore’s ceremonies will have “about 600 students” in each, next year’s Southmoore graduation is expected to be smaller because many seniors who currently live in the Southmoore boundaries have elected to stay in Moore and Westmoore for their final year in school.

“In 2010, we expect to have a large graduation for Southmoore high school,” Arato said. “And at that point we’ll really be able to see the effect of the new high school opening.”
