Vertie Annie Myers Stroud

MOORE — Vertie Annie Myers Stroud went to join the Lord Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at the age of 94.

Vertie was born June 23, 1919. Vertie married Joe Leonard Stroud Sept. 7, 1935, at the Pottawatomie County Courthouse. They shared 70 years of marriage until Leonard’s death in 2006. Vertie considered herself a farmer’s wife. In 1958, the family moved from the Macomb-Earlsboro area to the area we all know now as home. Vertie explained she had not moved since 1958 but changed addresses five times.

In 1968 both Vertie and Leonard accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior.

Vertie and Leonard were heavily involved with the Baptist Children’s home. In the mid 1980s, Vertie and Leonard were featured on Channel 9’s “Someone You Should Know” for their generosity in establishing a nonprofit program “Fishers for Jesus.”

The family had four well-stocked fishing ponds, a petting zoo and a playground for young children from the city to enjoy fishing and farm life. Several church groups and organizations devoted to young children attended this program. Vertie and Leonard enjoyed watching the children play and having fun. Treats were given to all the children who attended.

The past 90 years or so we got a glimpse of hard times and hard work. Neither Leonard nor Vertie were afraid of hard work. They both were willing to sacrifice for their family. Their devotion and strength is their legacy to all that knew them.

Vertie is survived by four sons and daughter-in-laws, Gene and Joan Stroud of Shawnee, Glenn and Imogene Stroud of Roff, Joe and Vera Stroud of Hueytown, Ala. and Keith Stroud of Moore. She is also survived by two daughters, Nellene Perry of Oklahoma City and Irene McAlister of Moore, and a sister, Vineta Chester of Spencer.

Vertie is surrounded by a large family which includes 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Vertie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe Leonard Stroud; one brother, Verdun Myers; one sister, Gussie Lee Myers; a son; Josh Leonard Stroud; and a grandson, James Leonard Stroud.

A celebration of Vertie’s life was Thursday Feb. 20 at Bill Eisenhour Southeast chapel with burial at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Moore.
