Donald Byron Jones

MOORE — Donald Byron Jones passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014. He was born July 7, 1917, in Connellsville, Pa., to Nellie R. and Frank W. Jones, the eldest of four sons. He was a former resident of Chillicothe, Ohio and Juno Beach, Fla., moving to Norman in 2000.

Don graduated from Connellsville High School in 1935 and from Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa., in 1939 with a degree in chemistry. He was employed that same year by Hall Laboratories Inc., a consulting firm on industrial water problems, first in their Pittsburgh office and later in Detroit.

During World War II he served from 1944 until 1946 in the U.S. Navy, being assigned to the Ringgold, a destroyer that saw duty in the western Pacific theatre.

In 1953, Don accepted employment with Goodyear Atomic Corporation at the U.S. Atomic Energy Corporation Uranium Enrichment plant in southern Ohio. He held management positions in utilities operations, utilities maintenance, and at the time of his retirement in 1984, was the manager of plant maintenance and engineering.

He held memberships in the National Association of Corrosion Engineers and the Cooling Tower Institute, serving a term as president of the institute. He was co-owner of a United States patent for a process of removing certain containments from industrial waste water.

As a member of Walnut Street United Methodist Church in Chillicothe, Ohio, he served as a trustee, official board member, Sunday school teacher, lay speaker, and as the church representative on the Chillicothe Hospital Board. He was eventually vice president and then president of the hospital board.

As a resident of Norman, he attended First Presbyterian Church, participated in one of Norman’s Leaders Plus classes and enjoyed the opportunities offered at the University of Oklahoma for continuing education classes, public lectures and concerts.

Don was married Aug. 13, 1948, to Grace E. Carroll, who preceded him in death in March 1999. A brother, F. Walter Jones, also preceded him in death.
