Kathryn Sharon (Fitzpatrick) Benshoof

MOORE — Kathryn “Kay” Sharon (Fitzpatrick) Benshoof, of Moore, passed away Friday, July 12, 2013. She was born May 1, 1940, to Leo and Margaret Fitzpatirck in Devils Lake, N.D.

Kay was a loving mother and grandmother and stayed at home while her children were young to raise them.

She began working at the State Capitol as a sergeant-at-arms for the State Senate in 1992. By 1995, she was promoted to the position of assistant chief sergeant-at-arms. This was the first time since statehood that a woman had held such a high and prestigious position in the Senate’s security arm.

Kay was a strong supporter of organized labor, and alongside her husband Jerry, worked on many campaigns for labor-endorsed candidates.

Kay was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jerry; her parents; and her twin brother, Jim Fitzpatrick.

She is survived by two sons, Kevin Benshoof of Moore and Brent Benshoof and wife Paula of Moore; two daughters, Shelly Benavidez and husband Vince of Oklahoma City and Tracy Clark of Moore; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gail Senger and husband Frank of Devils Lake, N.D., and Janie Borstad and husband Allen of Fergus Falls, Minn.

Kay was a feisty lady with a lot of spunk who enjoyed long car rides and spending time with her family.

The Benshoof family received family and friends for a formal visitation July 15 at the John M. Ireland Funeral Home in Moore.

A Funeral Mass was hosted July 16 at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Moore with Father Jack Feehily officiating. Interment followed at Moore Cemetery.

Services were under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home in Moore.
