Clyde Edgar ‘Duck’ Shroyer

MOORE — Clyde Edgar “Duck” Shroyer, of Moore, passed from this life Thursday, May 22, 2014. He was born June 20, 1923, at home in Moore. His entire life of 90 years was centered around his birthplace. He began elementary school in Moore in 1929 — the first year the restored school building in the 200 block of North Broadway was first occupied — and graduated from high school in 1941.

He attended the University of Oklahoma until his college education was interrupted by active duty in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He returned to OU in 1946 and graduated with a B.S. in architectural engineering in 1949. He was a registered professional engineer.

Clyde married Patsy Ann Estes in 1948, also a native of Moore. Their marriage endured wonderfully for almost 55 years, until her passing in 2003. This union produced six children, Sylvia “Susie” Price (deceased), Dwaine Shroyer of Edmond, Samuel Shroyer (deceased), Andrew Shroyer of Los Angeles, Dr. Kathryn “Katy” Young of Oklahoma City and Mayme Shroyer of Colorado Springs, Colo. He also leaves behind five grandsons, two great-grandsons, two great-granddaughters as well as his devoted and loving assistant and caregiver for the last 8 years, Melissa Martens.

Clyde was employed in the architectural field for 37 years, of which the last 27 years were with AT&T technologies. Early in his career, he designed the Moore Junior High School gymnasium located on NW 2nd Street and also managed the construction of what is now the Moore Junior High School. Clyde was very much involved in and devoted to his community. He served six years on the Moore Town Board, four years on the Moore City Council and was the first Mayor of Moore when the city became incorporated in 1962.

Clyde was very interested in history. He authored and published two books – “Claiming the Unassigned Lands,” a historical account of the records occurring from the first counties of Oklahoma, and “A Passing of Time — at Moore, Oklahoma,” a history of the City of Moore.
