Sammie Ray ‘Sam’ Mobly

MOORE — Sammie Ray “Sam” Mobly, 73, of Moore, passed away April 26, 2013. He was born Aug. 9, 1939, in Chickasha, to Dock and Ruby (Chapman) Mobly.

Services were 10 a.m. Monday at Southgate Baptist Church in Moore. Interment followed at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Oklahoma City.

Sam retired from the Moore Public School System and was the director of athletic maintenance. He took care of all of the athletic fields and was very proud of it.

Sam was a member of Southgate Baptist Church and faithfully served as chairman of the ushers.

He loved music and sang in a quartet at church. At one time, he led the music at a church in California. Sam was an avid golfer. He loved to pester people and was known for it.

Sam never met a stranger. He knew everyone and everyone knew him. Every time he went out, he saw someone he knew. Sam belonged to the “Southside Bums,” and Shirley was the “Saint of Cyril.”

His wife, Shirley, was the love of his life and he tells that he fell in love with her the first time he saw her. He asked her to go steady on their first date.

Sam was very proud of his lawn and it was always immaculate. People would go over there and take their shoes off and walk on it and sit on it because it was perfectly manicured.

Sam enjoyed maintaining his home and decorating for the holidays. He was known for his “Sam Burgers.”

Sam was very much of a family man. He was an amazing “Granddad,” as he was known by from his grandchildren. Sam was crazy about them. He adored babies.

His first love was his wife, Shirley, and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sam will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dock and Ruby Mobly; two brothers, Delmer and Bob Mobly; and one sister, Margie Myers.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Shirley Mobly of the home in Moore; five children and their spouses that he considered his children, Lisa and David Brittain of El Reno, Michael and Kim Mobly of Moore, Marji and Mark Robison of Oklahoma City, Ronny and Dawn Mobly of Owasso and Carla and Daryl Jones of Moore; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two more on the way; one brother, J.D. Mobly and wife Linda of Sacramento, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Dot Mobly of Moore; and one brother-in-law, Orville Myer of Oregon.

Services were under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home in Moore.
