Violet Lee Boyd

MOORE — Long time Moore resident, Violet Lee Boyd, died peacefully in her home on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, a few days from what would have been her 91 birthday. Violet was born in Oklahoma City and spent much of her early life in Coal County in Southeastern Oklahoma. She graduated from Centrahoma High School as an honor student and was named salutatorian of her senior class.

She briefly attended the University of Tulsa on scholarship but soon relocated to Oklahoma City to work with Douglas Aircraft. As a “Rosie the Riviter,” she became part of the female work force that supported the domestic defense industry during the 1940s. The relationships she formed with this group remained with her throughout her life. She participated in local and national reunions with her “Rosie” colleagues.

At the conclusion of World War II, she trained as a cosmetologist and worked professionally as a hairdresser before she married. In 1962, she moved with her family to Moore and began a career as a school secretary, working at Central Sky Ranch and Plaza Towers Elementary.

Violet lived a life of service. She had a strong work ethic and believed in the virtue of a job well-done. She had a strong faith with memberships throughout her adult life in the Christian church, including a 50-year membership with the First Christian Church of Moore where she served as deacon, elder and elder emeritus.

Violet is survived by a daughter, Carol Ann Reed and husband James Heffner of Alexandria, Va.; and a son, Ron Boyd and Patricia Shipley of Denver, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Idabell Clanton and Viola Yates of Moore; and her husbands, Floyd Boyd of Moore and J.L Martin of Norman; long-time companion, Robert Everett of Moore.

Services were held Sept. 24, at First Christian Church in Moore under the direction of John Ireland Funeral Home in Moore.
