Oscar Lee Carroll

MOORE — Oscar Lee Carroll, Lt. Col. (Ret.), US Air Force, 80, passed peacefully into the hands of our Lord, Saturday, March 10, 2012, in his home in Moore, after an extended battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Graveside Services with full military honors were Friday at Sunny Lane Cemetery, in Dell City.

Oscar was born Sept. 8, 1931 in West Columbia, Texas. In 1943 his family moved to Ajo, Ariz. when his father took a job at a copper mine. Oscar graduated from Ajo High in 1949 after being elected Class President and lettering in Football, working in the mine over the summers.

He was accepted to Arizona State College in Tempe, Ariz. where he entered the service of his country when the Korean Conflict began and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force in 1953, graduating with a B.A. in Math Education.

After meeting on a blind date, Oscar married Joann Marie Jenner on Jan. 23, 1954 at Tempe United Methodist Church and was a member of United Methodist in Moore.

Oscar served in the USAF in the following capacities: Radar Maintenance Officer, 615th ACWRON, Prum / Birkenfeld, Germany; Air Force Institute of Technology, B.S.E.E., Wright-Patterson AFB; Deputy Base Commander, 788th RADRON (SAGE), Waverly AFB; 4645 Support Sq (TDY - IBM’s White Plains Technology Center), Duluth Intl Airport. In 1963, Oscar served a 13 month tour of duty in Det 3, 619th TAC RON, Danang, Vietnam setting up the Radar Defense Systems at Monkey Mountain. On returning to the US, he served as: Tech. Trainer, 3380 Tech Training School, Keesler AFB; Training Manager, HQ ATC, Randolph AFB. Oscar further served as Military Advisor to the Royal Thai Air Force, Bangkok, Thailand; Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C.; and finally HQ SAC, Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City, as the Asst. Deputy Chief of Staff Electronics & Installations. Oscar retired as a Lt. Col. on Sept. 28, 1978, with an honorable discharge and full disability from heart and spine problems incurred during his 25 years of service.
