It's far too early to think about filling out income taxes but there are a group of folks eager to learn more about them and pass on that knowledge to others.

For several years, certified Tax Counselors have been helping income tax filers understand state and federal taxes. The volunteers, many of whom are retired, serve a minimum of four hours a week for 10 weeks preparing free state and federal tax forms for taxpayers with mid to lower incomes.

The emphasis is on low-income filers and for seniors. The program is volunteer-run through the American Association of Retired Persons in cooperation with the IRS.

More than 1,000 state and federal returns got the benefit of the AARP counselors this past year. The assistance is offered at the Norman Senior Citizens Center and the Norman Public Library.

The program needs volunteers and training is provided beginning Jan. 9 at 9 a.m. at the library. Volunteers get the satisfaction of helping their neighbors with a vital service.
