Consumer spending drives the nation’s economy, and the biggest chunk of it comes in the year’s final quarter. While they are seasonal, buyers are also kind of demanding when it comes to sales.
They want them bigger and more of them. Retailers this holiday season say shoppers want to see big, bold discounts before they spend. They also will be sticking more to budgets.
Consumer confidence remains at its lowest point since this past April. Retail sales were up slightly in October, and analysts expect that to grow to nearly 4 percent for the last two months of the year.
Retailers have dropped their profit outlook for the last quarter. They’re also moving “Black Friday” shopping deals up at least a day to take in those shoppers who plan on venturing out on Thanksgiving Day.
