Timberwolves thump Lions

MOORE — Quan Hogan has had some big nights in his brief career at Norman North. The sophomore has been a key figure in helping the Timberwolves replace last year’s state title contending team.

However, Hogan has never had a performance like he displayed Friday during North’s 49-14 dismantling of Moore at Moore Stadium. The speedy tailback reached the end zone six times after entering the game with nine touchdowns.

To go along with his six touchdowns, Hogan finished the night with 112 rushing yards and 96 receiving yards. When it was all said and done, even his coach was impressed with with the numbers Hogan compiled.

“I didn’t even know that,” North coach Wade Standley said. “Wow. I knew it was a bunch.”

The Lions’ (1-8, 1-4) job was made even tougher having to play without the services of tailback Ryan Lujan. The senior injured his MCL during practice this week and will miss the rest of the season. They lost another four players to injuries during the game.

In Lujan’s place, middle linebacker Tyler Buckles got the start in the backfield. While they still had success with Buckless, the Lions were missing the explosive plays from the position.

Hogan put the T-Wolves on the board first with a 47-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter.

He wasn’t done. He scored twice more on two of the Timberwolves’ next three possessions to give his team a 21-0 advantage with 10:08 left in first half.

With no Lujan, North tried to key on quarterback Jordan Bernhardy. The senior was able to rush for 117 yards, but he was unable to connect on very many downfield passes.

That was not a problem for North. Quarterback John Kolar hit Nick Basquine for a 52-yard pass play down to the Lions’ 8-yard line. Two plays later Kolar scored on a designed quarterback run.
