On the Lookout

MOORE — Midway through the 2014 season, it looks like No. 2 Westmoore has a chance to claim another slowpitch softball crown to add to the 10 the program has racked up since 1991.

If the Jaguars are able to accomplish the feat, senior Destinee Lookout will be a significant reason why they carry the trophy home. She leads the team in almost ever offensive category.

“Destinee is pretty much the backbone of our team,” senior Ana Rameriz said. “She is a great leader. She is awesome. She hits the ball when she needs to hit the ball. She does anything she can for the team.”

Yet, when the season began, it didn’t look like any of that was going to be relevant to the Jaguars since she wasn’t on the team’s roster.

She had been part of the team since her freshman season and she wanted to end the journey they started together. However, one big obstacle stood in Lookout’s path — her future.

After signing a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Oklahoma, Lookout was encouraged by her future college coaches to not play slowpitch this season. She took that advice

“Well, I was a little disappointed,” Westmoore coach Steve Schwarz said. “But you know that she is going to play college fastpitch. You’re a kid. You’re whatever you want to be. I didn’t beg her to come back. I’m not going to get in the way. I talked to her parents a little bit. They wanted me to talk to her about playing. I said that’s Destinee’s decision.”

Even her friends and teammates felt the slight sting of Lookout’s decision.

“Whenever she said she wasn’t playing, I was kind of heartbroken,” Rameriz said. “Been playing together since seventh grade and it’s our last year together.”
