The Moore American
MOORE — Coming from California, Dahu Green wasn’t aware of how big the rivalry between Westmoore and Southmoore was. Even though he had transferred to Westmoore during his sophomore year, he didn’t join the team until the offseason.
“Didn’t know at all how big this game was,” Green said. “Never seen a crowd that big.”
Even his coaches were curious how Green would perform once the lights of the Southwest Showdown came on. After Friday, they no longer have to worry. Green caught seven passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns to help lead Westmoore to a 31-13 win over Southmoore.
“You never know what you got until you get them out here under the lights and see how they react,” Westmoore coach Billy Langford said. “The kids a gamer. He loves competition. He is a great kid. He is so enthusiastic about practice. He keeps everybody light and going. We are very fortunate to have him.”
Green was being guarded much of the night by either Reginald Danzler or Lane Soltero. But the 6-foot-3 Green was able to use his height to overpower either cornerback.
Green’s height and leaping ability is a tool quarterback Bryson Lee has already come to count on. That included a play on 4th down that led to a touchdown.
“I looked to the left side and the center,” Lee said. “Saw they had a press and we had some slants going over there. I didn’t like that, so throw it up to the big man.”
As part of the Great American Rivalry series, Green was named the game’s MVP. But his coach says it was also a team effort that allowed Green to have his breakout performance.
“The thing is, we have other guys,” Langford said. “So they can’t just focus on one guy. They tried to do that and we threw a slant and (Deshawn) Lookout took it 80. We have some other pieces, that if people try and take him away, the other guys are going to respond.”
But for Green, it may have been a little push from his coaches that helped him the most.
“Coach (Patrick) McKay always gives good pregame speeches,” Green said. “He kind of told us about it. You get goosebumps after you hear him talk. That’s when it kicked in. That’s when I felt it. It means lot. We have to keep working. We’ve been talking about this a long time. You feel it under your chest. You have to come out here and let it all out. That’s what we did.”
Green and Westmoore will take their 2-0 record to Norman North Friday to take on the Timberwolves (1-1).
