Dual state on tap for area wrestling teams

MOORE — When the Dual State Championship tournament takes place this weekend, teams from around class 6A will battle for the coveted championships. Of the eight teams to advance to the tournament, two come from the Moore School District.

Westmoore and Southmoore have both earned spots in Saturday's Dual State tournament, which will be held at Claremore High School.

The quarterfinal round will take place at 10 a.m. The Jaguars will face Tulsa Union and the SaberCats will take on Muskogee.

The winners will advance to the semifinals at 2 p.m. The championship match is set for 6:30 p.m.

In the past, the championships have been split over two days. But this year, it's all taking place in day. The winning team will have to win three matches in 10 hours.

Both Southmoore and Westmoore head into Dual State with some of the top wrestlers in the area on their rosters.

They include Dalton Duffield, Soloman Vanover and John Finn for the Jags and Conor Dooling, Zac Damico and Nathan Marek for the SaberCats.

Swimming

It was a clean sweep for Norman North, and it wasn’t close.

The Timberwolves took the top spot on both the girls’ and boys’ side of the Mid-State Conference swim meet Saturday at Oklahoma City Community College. The girls won the event by more than 100 points, defeating second-place Edmond Memorial 534.50 to 389.50. Westmoore was fourth and Southmoore was fifth.

Moore finished just outside the top-five with 118 points in sixth place. However, Alex Ballard left with the top spot in the 100-freestyle with a time of 55.92. She also claimed the 100-backstroke title. No other area girl placed first.

On the boys side, the Timberwolves cruised to a 28-point victory over Memorial. NHS finished third on both sides, losing by just 9.5 points to Memorial. Southmoore (220), Westmoore 9115) and Moore (71) rounded out the top-six.
