Lions come out flat against in loss to Huskies

EDMOND — Turnovers and big plays have been a problem for Moore, and continued to be Thursday when it lost 49-13 to Edmond North at Wantland Stadium in Edmond.

The loss drops the Lions to 1-7 on the season as their struggles to hold onto the ball doomed them from the very start.

“We didn’t play like we should have,” Moore senior Evan Sprayberry said. “Came out really, really, bad. It’s the only word I can say.”

The Lions got the ball to start the game. On fourth-and-one on its own 29, they attempted to catch the Huskies (5-3, 4-1) off guard with a quick kick. However, the maneuver failed when quarterback Jordan Bernhardy had his punt blocked by North’s Mark Piatt and recovered on the 19-yard line.

Two plays later Luke Rossi caught a touchdown pass to give the Huskies the early advantage.

The Lions gave the ball back again on the very next possession when Antonio Williams picked off Bernhardy. It led to back-to-back touchdowns by Ezel McIntee, who put the Huskies up 21-0.

Moore’s lone bright spot came when Casen Haddox blocked a North field goal attempt late in the period in the opening quarter. But Moore was unable to translate it into points.

Midway through the second quarter, Moore had its third turnover when on fourth down the snap went over the head of punter Lance Biswell’s. North took over on the Moore 23, and Marcus Ford scored on the short drive.

Bernhardy was able to make things happen with his legs that allowed him to pick up a few first downs. But Edmond North put the clamps on tailback Ryan Lujan any time he touched the ball. The passing game was nowhere to be found.

Moore got its offense moving late in the first half when Bernhardy drove the team down the field before they stalled out at the Huskies 40-yard line with less than a minute on the clock.
