Sooners lose key leader for season to knee injury

MOORE — On the same day Oklahoma earned its biggest win of the season, it suffered one of its biggest losses.

OU coach Bob Stoops said senior fullback Trey Millard is done for the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his left leg during the Sooner’s 38-30 win over No. 10 Texas Tech Saturday at Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium.

“It will end his season,” Stoops said. “I’m sure it will take a few weeks before they operate on him. I’m just crushed by it. I hate it. He’s such a strong part of our football team. It will be tough to overcome the loss.”

Millard’s injury occurred late in the contest at the end of a play as he was rolled up by a host of players. He was escorted to the locker room by trainers.

“That’s tough,” Linebacker Eric Striker said. “We lose a leader. Someone who is very sound. Someone a lot of people on this team look up to, including me. We will keep him in our prayers.”

The Sooners didn’t find out how severe the injury was until they got back to the locker room. Then the full impact of the news began to hit them.

“He’s the best player on our football team,” senior Gabe Ikard said. “He’s the most versatile person on our football team. My heart is broken for him. He’s one of the guys who just loves the game, and for it to happen on something like getting rolled up on a kick-off, that’s tough to swallow for everyone on this team.”

Millard has been a constant for the Sooners during his time at Oklahoma. Not having him in games to count on will be a tough adjustment for the team.

“That hurts,” safety Gabe Lynn said. “He is one of the best teammates I’ve ever played with. Somebody is going to have to step up and those are big shoes to fill. But we are going to keep rolling.”
