Lookout commits to Sooners

MOORE — Three weeks after Westmoore’s DeShawn Lookout received his first college scholarship offer to play football at Arkansas State, that was trumped by his dream school, Oklahoma.

However, it was the Sooners baseball team that offered Lookout a full ride to come to OU. Yet, it was the possibility of playing both football and baseball that intrigued Lookout enough to commit to Oklahoma on the spot.

“They offered Friday,” Lookout said. “So I liked what I got and I took it. It’s important to play both. I’m passionate about both so I’m just excited.”

Lookout, 6-foot-2, 180 pounds junior-to-be, helped lead the Jaguars to Class 6A state tournament this past season as a shortstop and pitcher.

On the football field, Lookout finished the 2013 season with 46 receptions for 595 yards and scored five touchdowns.

Lookout didn’t want to have to choose between either sport.

“Growing up I wasn’t expecting to play both,” Lookout said. “I like both but I didn’t expect I could play both when I was younger. But now that I can, I’m excited for it.”

Lookout said he talked it over with the OU baseball coaching staff and CO-offensive coordinator Josh Heupal. He said Heupal told him it would be tough, but that he can do it.

Lookout still has two years left of high school before he even touches a college field in either sport. In that time he could start to lean toward one sport over the other or decide he wants to play for another school. Verbal commits are not binding until athletes sign Letters of Intent their senior season of high school.

But Lookout seems solid in his stance on wanting to be a Sooner.

“I’m probably going to stick with OU,” Lookout said. “My sister (Destinie) is going there. I’m starting to really like it. They really wanted me and got me. They have been with me a lot. Paid attention and got to know me. They really wanted me more. So that’s who I went with.”
