NORMAN — Led by Jason Shawn, the Moore High golf team took second place at the Norman Invitational Monday at the Trails Golf and Country Club.

The Lions shot a 316, which was six shots behind Edmond Santa Fe. Southmoore took third with 317.

“Compared to last year, we are a lot better,” Shawn said. “We have four seniors on varsity now that could easily shoot mid to low 70s. We all just need to get to that point. We have a much better team than last year and should definitely make it to state.”

Shawn was the low man for the Lions after shooting a 78. It was good for fifth overall. However, Shawn saw some areas he could have done better in.

“I didn’t play to my standards,” Shawn said. “I had my fair share of bad shots. I guess I can’t be too disappointing. I shot a 78 and took fifth place. But still not happy with how I actually played.”

Derek Harris was the only other Lion to place in top-10. He took seventh.

Shawn said he can already see that the team has grown since last season when it was full of juniors and made it to state.

“I think the juniors just grew up over the summer,” Shawn said. “Level headed. Just p laying better golf. Not making them mistakes we were last year. Getting a little bit more seniors.”

The expectations for the Lions is to return to the state tournament. But this time bring home some hardware.

“We probably can’t contend with the Edmond School or Norman North,” Shawn said. “But I feel if we all play to our standards, we can probably be top eight. Maybe six, if we all play well.”
