World Cup of Softball on tap

MOORE — Softball season in Oklahoma is not done yet. The World Cup of Softball will kick off Thursday at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Team USA will look to defend its crown against several of the top countries around the world. They include Japan, Australia, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Team USA has a local flavor with two players for the National Champions University of Oklahoma squad. Lauren Chamberlian and Destinee Martinez will dawn the Red, White and Blue. Player of the Year Keilani Ricketts was also named to the team, but is no longer on the roster. According to USA officials, it was a business decision.

Tournament play begins Thursday and will end with the title game Sunday.

Soccer for a cause: Oklahoma City FC will take on the San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League in an exhibition match at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Toyota Field.

A portion of the proceeds from the match will be donated by San Antonio to aid in the May tornado relief effort in Oklahoma.

“Soccer for a Cause was established to help people; that is why we are here,” San Antonio Scorpions President Howard Cornfield said in a press release. “We will donate a portion of our proceeds from this game to help those that continue to suffer from the devastating effects of the May 20 tornado.”

Soccer for a Cause is a campaign started to help build community relations between the Scorpions and the city of San Antonio.

San Antonio is not the first OKC FC opponent to donate proceeds from a match to the tornado relief effort. On June 22, the division-rival Austin Aztex donated all of the proceeds from a match between Austin and Oklahoma City on June 1.

OKC FC players also volunteered to help in the relief effort. On May 21-22, players from the men’s and women’s squads volunteered at a supply drive at Lighthouse Sports, Fitness and Heath. OKC FC helped collect baby formula, bottle water, diapers, Gatorade, hand towels, money, wipes and work clothes.
