MOORE —

Sooners at WUG: You have to wonder if Oklahoma women’s basketball coach Sherri Coale was thinking about her time as Norman High girls coach. Because that was the last time she approached winning a game by so many points.

It took place at the World University Games, where Coale is coaching the Team USA women. Preliminary round play began Monday and the Americans finished off a route of Mali 120-32.

The Sooner flavor did not end with Coale. One of her players, she coaches in real life, too.

OU rising senior and shooting guard Aaryn Ellenberg was one of six Americans to finish in double figures, scoring 11 points in just 14 minutes of floor time.

Ellenberg canned 4 of 9 field-goal attempts, including a 3-pointer and two free throws, while also grabbing a rebound and being credited with a steal.

The international model includes 40 minutes of basketball, spaced out by four 10-minute quarters rather than two 20-minute halves.

Coale’s squad led 28-12 after a quarter and 57-20 at the half. The Americans were just getting started.

Kazan, where the games are taking place, is nine hours ahead of Central Standard Time.

Team USA is back in action to face the Czech Republic at 11:30 this morning, before taking on Brazil at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Those two games will complete preliminary round play.

The World University Games is a multi-sport event that takes place every two years, reserved for male and female athletes between 17 and 24 years old.

USA Basketball women’s teams have participated in 16 previous World University Games, winning gold eight times, silver six times and bronze once.

Coale’s team is looking to defend the gold medal Team USA claimed two years ago in Shenzhen, China.

Former Jaguar passes away: Former Westmoore football standout Joey Fowler, 24, died June 30 in Oklahoma City. The 2007 graduate attended Texas Tech University on a football scholarship. After one year as a Red Raider, Fowler transferred to Central Oklahoma, and then to ACM@UCO, where he studied music production.
