MOORE — Westmoore’s Shayla Lucas signed her National Letter of Intent Nov. 13 to play softball at University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO). She said it was a perfect fit for her.
“When I went on my visit, it just felt right,” Lucas said. “The atmosphere was good. I liked the team and I really liked the coaches. I was looking at Rose State and I really liked it there. But USAO was right for me.”
Lucas is coming off a senior season in which she batted .312. For her career she carried a .323 average.
“I can’t even put into words how great it feels to get this opportunity and to just know that everything I’ve worked for has paid off,” Lucas said. “Everyone has always told me, I will get the opportunity, I just have to keep working hard. That’s what I did. I just always had to work hard to get the opportunity.”
Lucas, who also plays on the Jags slowpitch team, brings more than just talent to whatever squad she is on.
“Shayla is very good,” Westmoore slowpitch coach Steve Schwarz said. “Especially defensively. She will do anything you ask. She’s a great leader. That’s something she really has. She brings girls together. She is a fun kid.”
Hoop season tipping off: Most area basketball teams will not take the court until the first week of December. The Southmoore boys will start a little bit earlier.
