Diamond champions: Southmoore does it again

SaberCats end year with fast pitch & slow pitch titles

SHAWNEE — It’s been almost a year since a tornado ripped through Moore and leveled much of the city.

As the anniversary of the tornado looms, the first thoughts that came to Southmoore coach Jason Lingo’s  mind as he walked off the field Tuesday with a state championship in tow was just how strong his city and his team are.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our kids for everything they went through in the last 11 and half months,” Lingo said. “It’s been quite an ordeal and we all lived through it. Softball became something they looked forward to to get away from the problems around our community. Moore is tough. And we’re tough too. The SaberCats are tough.”

Southmoore defeated Tahlequah 14-8 for the class 6A state championship at the Firelake Ballfields in Shawnee. They smashed three homers and 19 hits to run away with the title.

“It’s unexplainable,” Trenity Edwards said. “We should be the proudest kids out in the words right now. We should be the proudest kids in the world right now. It’s hard to win double. Focus was our word of the day today. We knew we couldn’t hit lots of home runs in this wind. We just said stay focused and hit line drives.”

Senior Carley Strawn picked up the win for the SaberCats. Even though she allowed the Tigers to plate a few runs, she didn’t give up the big inning that could have put the Cats in jeopardy.

The win gave Southmoore back-to-back titles in fastpitch and slow pitch. It’s something that has happened since Moore High accomplished the feat in 2008.

“It was very meaning ful for me,” Strawn said on winning back to back, “because all my life I’ve never won in slow pitch. So I was excited. We were just wanting to win both of them because we know how hard it is to accomplish that. We knew how big of a deal it was, so we kind of just kept our heads up through all of it. It was a big deal for us.”

While Southmoore was never really in danger in the championship, that could not be said for its semifinal match with Muskogee. The SaberCats trailed the Roughers 12-5 in the fifth inning and it seemed their title chase was done.

But the ’Cats (32-5) rallied to win 15-14 in seven innings.

“Once we came back in that fifth inning in the semifinal, we came too far to ruin it now,” Arielle James said. “We have to go for it. I think I’m just going to remember how fun this game was. Even we would have lost, I can honestly say this is the funnest game I’ve ever played in.”
