Miller wins Iron Kid

MOORE — Zane Miller has been a busy kid. While many other boys and girls his age spent their summer lounging around and playing video games, the 9-year-old from Earlywine Elementary was busy winning national competitions.

In August, Miller took first place in his age group at the Ironkids Trials in Sioux City, Neb. In the process he broke several trial records and set some personal bests.

Because he took first, Miller automatically qualified for the National Ironkids Triathlon in Des Moines on Sept. 1. He went on to finish first in his age group, once again becoming the Ironkids National Champion for 2012 in the 9-year-old division. He beat out 59 other competitors from across the country.

In the 9-to-11 category, Miller was fourth overall out of 475 kids. His time of 24 minutes and 11 seconds was four seconds away from third place and less than a minute from the overall title. He was the only 9-year-old to finish in the top 10.

That would have been enough for most kids, but not Miller. After picking up his medals, he and his family drove to Plano, Texas where he competed in and won gold at the USA triathlon regional championship.

“It’s absolutely once in a life time to see your child win a national championship,” Brent Miller said of his son Zane. “I’m one of a few select parents to get to witness it. He’s an amazing athlete and has a bright future in the sport.”
