“It’s a very big accomplishment,” Staggs said. “Seeing how hard everybody has worked. Coming from really nothing to something, it’s really special to be part of and to be able to experience with everybody.”
But if Jaguars scored only one point, it would still be one more than they scored in the past two state meets combined. But they have higher expectations than that.
“The key for us at state is not to be satisfied just making it there,” Ross said. “I have a lot of first year runners who have never ran in a track meet in their lives until this year. They need to focus on the task and finish. The rest will take care of itself.”
Regardless of what happens at state, the turn around the program has been through has made it a successful and unexpected season.
“I remember the first time they got medals, they were excited,” Ross said. “Then all of a sudden, it was coach we have a chance to win this. Then it all of a sudden it was coach, we’re going to win this meet. It just snowballed all year. Success kind of breeds success. The kids have grabbed it and ran with it.”
