MOORE — For the third consecutive year, the Moore Lions have reigned supreme at the Moore Festival. Competing against rivals Westmoore and Southmoore in dual matches, MHS went 2-0 Dec. 18.
“It’s real big,” junior McKale Washington said. “We are building a tradition. We are putting dominance over all Moore schools and all schools in the west.”
Moore began the event by rolling past the Jaguars 43-25. Of its nine victories, five of them came by pin. That includes Derek Sivertsen who beat his opponent in less than two minutes.
“I try and instill in those guys you have to have heart, keep fighting through tough times. Tough times happen for everybody. You just have to fight through those tough times, and they did. We got falls when we needed falls.”
One of the closest matches of the day was Moore’s Josh Lindsey holding off Keaton Randle 3-2 in the 132 pound division. Lindsey is a former state runner-up and Randle is ranked No. 6 in the state.”
After dispatching the Jaguars, Moore beat Southmoore
“We wrestled the first two matches and my kids wrestled outstanding,” MHS coach Robert Washington said. “I don’t think they gave us too many chances to win and I think they wrestled their tails off. We stayed in the matches an got close. When they got chances to get pins, they did. That’s a good formula. You work hard, out work your opponent and good things will happen for you.”
Southmoore concluded the evening by defeated Westmoore 42-26.
It wasn’t the kind of showing Westmoore coach Mark Peck had wanted. But he knew coming in that he had a young squad.
“We are always looking to improve in every aspect of the sport, from senior leadership to overall intensity,” Peck said. “All of our wrestlers have the ability to contribute to the success of this team. In order for us to achieve our goals they must continue to push each other in the practice room, in the classroom, and on the mat.”
Westmoore doesn’t have much time off. It will be heading to Shreveport, LA. for the Evangel Holiday Classic tournament Friday and Saturday.
“We came into the season knowing that we had a very good Freshman class and they have really stepped up for us,” Peck said. “They helped our junior High program to a 2nd place finish at the Shawnee Duals and came through in big matches against Midwest City. Dalton Duffield 106, Wes Hardin 113, Deven Brewer 145, and Daevon Newton 195 all won their matches and will be a big part of our team’s success moving forward this season and many to come.”
Southmoore will head to the Geary Tournament Jan. 4-5 while Moore travel to the Jenks tournament. They hope to carry with them the momentum from the Festival .
