With the summer months on the way, the Moore Norman Technology Center has an idea for parents looking for something to do with their kids.

The MNTC wants them to consider the MNTC 15th Annual Summer Youth Academy. According to academy officials, the camp is an educational option for students this summer.

Students ages nine to 16 have over 120 classes to choose from in the learning areas of technical and engineering, health and medical, personal interest. The first sessions begin June 7 and the last sessions run the week of June 28.

All classes are $70 and MNTC provides all materials and supplies. Students are in the week-long classes from either 9 a.m. to noon, or 1 to 4 p.m. The only class fee exceptions are the MED Camp and the CSI Camp, which are each $125, and students are in class for daylong sessions Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The complete list of classes and descriptions is available for download online at www.mntechnology.com.

Academy enrollment is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, April 29 at MNTC's Information and Enrollment Center, inside Main Entrance B at the Franklin Road Campus, 4701 12th Ave. NW in Norman. Or at the South Penn Campus, SW 134th and Penn in south Oklahoma City.

Online enrollment (www.mntechnology.com/sya) is also encouraged for the fastest selection of classes. Parents can also enroll their children over the phone by calling 364-5763, ext. 7260.

According to MNTC, the classes challenge kids in their specific areas of interest and give them the opportunity to explore programs not available during the regular school year. Class examples this year include: Manners Matter, Sewing is Fun, Robotics I & II, Better Baby-sitting, Movie Making, Cartooning, Acting I & II, Computer Repair, CO2 Car Racing, Interior Design, Aerospace/Flight and Hair Rage.

Instruction is delivered through guided activities, hands-on-practice and lab activities. Age groups are divided into 9-11 year-olds and 12-14 year-olds. The only exception is the Car Care Basics class, which is specifically for 15-16 year-olds.

Instructors are Moore, Norman and area schoolteachers, former students and local professionals. All have completed OSBI background checks.
