In this hurried, multi-tasking world we live in, we don't always get to know our neighbors.

We see them coming and going as we hurry to the next soccer match or grocery store run. Porches are smaller now, with not much space to sit.

Tonight, the opportunity to get to know folks presents itself. It's the annual Neighborhood Night Out Against Crime. Twenty-nine Norman neighborhoods have signed up for events so far.

Our mayor, city manager, police and fire chiefs and some council members will spend the evening visiting as many of the scheduled events as possible from 6:30 to 10 p.m. tonight.

Nationwide, thousands of neighborhoods are expected to participate. Sponsors are the National Association of Town Watch with some funding by the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.

Even if your neighborhod doesn't have a scheduled event, turn on the porch lights and get to know those folks you wave to each morning.
