The City of Norman's decision to open a new parking lot at 710 Asp Ave. was exactly what Campus Corner needed.
While we would argue that, most of the time, parking spaces in and around Campus Corner aren't too difficult to find, especially if you don't mind parallel parking, the new lot, which features 61 spaces and three van-accessible disabled spaces, will certainly come in handy during peak hours.
With the standard rate of $1 per hour from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, Normanites should have no surprises with cost or duration. Payment can be made at two stations in the lot or using the Whoosh! mobile app, which other lots in the area use.
The parking lot should help drive more people to Campus Corner, spending money with local small businesses, which keeps more of our money in the community.
And for anyone who is critical of the lot's location: first of all, there aren't that many wide open spaces near Campus Corner on which to build a parking lot.
Secondly, the lot is less than half a block from the north end of Campus Corner, and one could argue it's actually well within the district's boundaries. A little bit of walking is to be expected, and most of us could use the extra steps.
The new parking lot won't solve every infrastructure challenge, but it's a strong move in the right direction. Kudos to the city for getting it done.
