The number of W’s in the Moore High football team’s schedule has slowly been shrinking during the past few years. Although they have a tough schedule this season, the team is confident they can make the playoffs this year.

“We worked out a lot harder,” junior cornerback Johnny Carter said. “Basically we just hit everything full speed rather than last year we just didn’t work as hard. And we’re a lot more focused.”

Saturday’s intra-squad scrimmage showed fans just what they may be in for this season. The offense showed signs of being better than advertised and the defense looked like it had potential to form a sold unit.

It started with the Lions keeping a lot of heat on every quarterback that played. The defense racked up sacks as the secondary looked very strong breaking up passes and making a couple interceptions.

“Our secondary is very good,” said Carter. “Our defense is a lot better than it was and I think we have a great shot at going deep into the playoffs.”

Despite the constant defensive pressure, the MHS offense was able to find success at times. Senior quarterback Billy Balak showed signs of maturing when on several occasions he decided to take the sack rather than force the pass. The running game looked exceptional with big runs made by the backs.

Asked who to watch out for this season, everybody had the same response.

“You should definitely look out for Jared Jackson,” senior wide receiver Blake Heintzelman said. “He’s going to be a good player.”

The Lions have a lot of confidence coming out of their first scrimmage. They now prepare for a trip to Yukon High Friday.

From what he has seen of his squad so far, free safety Taylor Gardner believes the Lions will fare well this season.

Hopefully, for the Lions, that confidence shows on the field because the they have one of the state’s toughest schedules. With seven of the teams they face having played in the playoffs last year, the players are not scared. If anything they are ready for the competition.

“Be ready,” says Gardner, “because we’ve got a lot of speed coming at you.”
